Whistle Arrow (哨箭 Shaojian) Topped by a whistle carved from burlwood and feathers attached (fletched) to the end to stabilize it when shot from the bow, this arrow produces a high-pitched sound when flying through the air. These non-lethal arrows were used by commanders for signaling purposes in order to communicate with troops on the battlefield. A label glued to the shaft, between the feathers reads, “Made in Tianjin county by Zhang Menglin, drum, thin head, one pair” (天津縣張夢麟鼓子薄頭一對). It is unclear what is meant by “drum” and “thin head,” but it could describe the type of whistle arrow this is.
