Function: Statue of a man with very broad shoulders, left arm bent across the body, and the right raised in greeting. It has a round, moulded face with short beard. Substantial remains of painted decoration and facial features in black, red and white exist. Acquisition: Excavated at Mersinaki in north-western Cyprus by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition (1927-1931). Acquired by the Cyprus Collections, subsequently the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm in 1931 when the finds from Cyprus were brought to Sweden and the museum set up. Why this is a masterpiece This is one of the finest terracotta sculptures found at Mersinaki and one of the best preserved. The Greek influence in Cypriot sculpture of this period is drastically reduced and instead the Sub-Archaic Cypro-Greek style is developed. History of the Object Excavated in the sacred area of Mersinaki, located half way between Soloi and Vouni near the north coast of Cyprus.
