Trumma. Tonal drum (Kalangu). A drummer using this instrument normally sits on a stool about the height of a man´s knee, and palys two of these drums. One is held under the left arm, with the sling passing over the left shoulder; the other rests transversely across the > right thigh, with the sling passing under the ball of the right foot. By squeezing with the left arm or by pressing down the rigth foot, the tension of the thongs surrounding the drum is increased, the skin of the head is tightened, and the note of the drum-beat is raised. When two drums are used, the one on the leg will usually be smaller and therefore different in tone from the other. The strap is used to wind about the thongs, and is tightened to set the required basic note of the drum. Made in Makarfi District, Northern Zaria, and purchased from a professional drummer in Soba 1951.
