L.W. Bergstrand meddelar i ett brev av 26/11 1953 följande: The carved heads come from the Middle and Upper Sepik Areas and they are often used for decorating the "House Tambaran", the adult males gathering place, where the natives practice their ancient rituals. During the times when, not so long ago, cannibalism was a regular practice amongst most of the natives in New Guinea, skulls displayed in the "House Tamberan" were generally the genuine article taken from victims killed in tribal warfare.
...As regards skulls modelled out of clay I do not think that the wooden carvings are taking their place, instead, I believe that certain villages where suitable clay is available and where the art of making pottery is practiced, the art of wood carving would not have developed and in those areas skulls would be made of clay rather than out of wood.

P. Hinderling, Museum für Völkerkunde, Basel, meddelade i ett brev av 11/9 1953 följande:... Die "Holzhäupter" sind nach Dr. Wirz Tanzenobjekte, die auf Stäbchen gesteckt werden. ...von den Holzhäupter sagte Dr. Wirz...sofort: Sepik. Er hat offenbar nicht den Eindrück, es könnten Fälschungen sein.
