Dear Dr. Andersson:- I have been ill for some time since I am back from Central China, therefore delay in answering your letters. The last letter I have from you is that of July Uth with the list of the return consignment N:r 6 for which I have immediately applied for passport. Whith reference to your letter of April 8 concerning the printing of Palmgren”s paper on Panshan potteries, I replied you by a cablegram, yesterday. tAgree to print Palmgren” s. monograph for Survey" That means I agree to your proposal to print the heliotype plates by G: L. 4. with tie total cost amounting to er. 10,1405 (the present exchange rate is about one to one Chinese silver). The printing of this and the following monographes in the Palaeontologia Sinica Series will involve a great financial burden to the Survey, especially in view of the difficult condition as we have now. However I hope that part of the money can be recovered "from the selling of the publications which we have not so far carried out very efficiently. It is in the best interest for the continuation of the publications that endeavor shall be made for better selling öf our publicatlönsg. I propose the following practical understanding: (1) To limit as far as possible, the free distribution. Hitherto 200 copies are given to Swedish authors for distribution as "authorg” compliments". This is much more than we give to other authors in

og. China who receive only 50 copies each. I suggest to cut down these complimentary copies to 100 (which must be amply enough). There will be tus 700 copies for the Survey. Experience shows that Archeological Memoirs are much better sold than the palaeontological ones in the far east. Thus your papers on "An Early Chinese Culture" is now entirely exhausted, and all the three fascicles of the Palaeontologia Sinica Ser. D. Vol. I are also RSarly 80. (2) To extend and facilitate the selling: There may be left in Sweden or in other large centers in Europe a number of copies for selling for the Survey's account. I shall welcome your suggestions for better supplying the European readers. (3) To have the printed memoirs more guickly reädy for the public. In the present conditions, there is usually a great laps of time between the printing of the Swedish printed papers and their official distribution and selling by the Survey. This had two in- convenient results: First all the important men and institutions promptly received their copies from the 200 "author”s copies" from Sweden so that the copies which the Survey send out considerably later have no more actual interest. Second, many people even do not know that the publications are to be obtained from the Survey of China, and therefore do not order fron us. This delay is mainly due to the slow sending of the printed copies from Sweden much more than to the printing of Chinese summary. To mention one instance: Lowe”s paper on Struthius remains was published in October 1931, and Swedish copies have reached löng ago every possible interested person in the world, but the Survey have not even received the bill of lading of our own copies except one sample copy. This seems a Tfn AR to the Survey besides any consideration for the selling. I therefore suggest the following new arrangement for all the Papers
