6410. Ma XOrn- POSTAL. COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE, POST OFFICE, Tsinan, Shantung, China, ERNA 5 fr SE Dear Professor Anderson, A few weeks ago, just before I left Peipirc, Mr. .Karlbeck ceme to see my few Scythian bron2zes amå rade a selection whick he asked me to get photographed, a& he thovght you would like to see copies. As I was on trensfer to "sinanfu, I had little time to arrange these, and find that Hartung, who did the photography, has got fome of them upside down. However, they may be of interest to you. Mr. Karlbeck said you would possibly care to write them up; and if you wish to do so, the material is/entirely at your disposal. Photographs by ”artung, Peipingz. The plaque with tae two 2) is in silver but was bought $o cheaply that it is almost certainly only a copy. However, the design is interesting. Mr.Karlbeck was quite run down, and baliy in need of a rest, as he, like myself had had plenty of worries here. My knowledge of things Scythian is pitifully meagre, but I an greatly interested. My ov7r particular line is the bronze l3th century crosses from the Yrdos country which some people maintain are Nestorian in origin, and on which Prof. Pelliot wrote an interesting article, with plates, in the "Revue des Arts Asiatiques"fr March 1931. I now have over 7090 of those crosses and birds, and it is most interesting to note the frecouent recurrence of symbols which no one here can interpret at all. Prof. .Pelliot is in China now, and had intendedi to study my collection, but I am not sure whether he will be able to now I. am here. I believe you have about 100 stored away in your Stockholm mussevm. Have you any theories about them? Though it is hardly likely the I can be of any assistance to you in any way here, please beléeve that I am only too eagert to åo0 anyhting I can. I have plenty of time, and an egu2l amount of enthusiasm, so make use of me if you wish to. Sincerely yours ö | RC RPAERN P.S; Tnae roll of prints is sent by this mail by'” registered printec matter poet. Jun,
