0258 Av skrift. The National GCeologicoal Survey of China, 9 Ping Ha S|eu. Vest City, Pelping, China, Dr. JG. Andersson Östasiatiska Samlingarna, August 3, 1932. Sveavägen 65, Stockholm, Sveden. Dear Dr. Andersson, Thank you very much for your letter of June 25tn and the ancelosures, ”ith regarå to Lowe” se paper and the estimates, after son. sultation with Dr. V.K. Ting I agree with the opinion of the committee, and 80 I wish you will have Bortzell undertake the work, their figure being 2,193:30 Swed. Kr. ” å - to red måg Aelg 267 of silver, v své Rv in & sitio ov n n8ses., Ve sha frok SISe ReeåRGSR över / 808 -2olaP Es Nr, Lagrelius for Zdansky” & memoir on early Tertlary foösslls, As has been communiceted to you by Dr. V.K. Ting, we like to reserve and can only spare £ 5000 silver a year för tie printing of the palaeontologicel or arocheological papers by our Swedisk friends. Owing to the accumulated debt to lr. Lagrelius of $£ 800 gold our budget 1s therefore particularly heavy this year. However, I shall do my best to pay any other paper the committee in Stockholm sball decide to print in Sweden within the stated amount besides the old debt but including Lowe's paper. That means we underteke to pay up to £ 9000 silver for the Swedish contributions in the Palaeontologia Sinica., I think tuis 18 all we can do for tbe present year. The palaeontologicel study in China has flourished simost out of our expectations, thanks to tie good foundations laid by our Swedish friends, At present, there are not less tban seven monographa waiting for publication in FPeiping, besides those on Choukoutien deposits to be printed by & special fund. 50 we have our banda full and are at & 1088 how to get enough fund. As you must well know, we sincerely welcome the publication of the papers contributed bed our iwedisk friends in our series, and in allotting the fund for printing, we have done and shall do our very best to have them published sarg & on the sole consideration of their scientific interest. Yet given the limited fund available and the pressing need of publications, I wonder, since the Crown Prince and other friends in Sweden have done so much in promoting this branch of study, whether they might not be able to render tneir good offices again in pro. curing some additional financial assistance for the Palsaeontologia S5inica from certsin quarters in Sweden or elseowhere. As tost for print is so high and tbe need is so urgent, such help, 1f fortheoming, will indeed be greatly appreciated. Any such additional fund 1f available will be of course entirely reserved for the printing in Sweden. This is of course a personal wish tentatively suggested to you as an olå friend. | ve have received so far 5 pen ep pod of your Arehavolo» &eical meterial which we heve shown in a special exhibition open to public. I suppose trere remain other things whlieh you will ship back to China. I shall be glad to have early announcement.

0257 Avskrift. - Of the pelseontologicel material returned here, may I be permitted to tell our frank opinion. fe are very satisfled of the paleobotanicel collections sent back by Dr. Halle. The collections are of great utility here för comparison, and bis description 18 also much used. I personally made a collection of Tingia flora from Liuhokou the last spring, and sent it entirely to his laboratorg. The material sent back from Dr. Wiman” s laboratory 1s very incomplete exept gpoieesn pa the first 10t when you were still here in the Ministry. We have received so far nothing of the Hesozolo and early Tertiary fauna of Sbantung, which heve already been deseribed in the Palaeontologlia Sinica. How for practioal use, Dr. C.C. 0 Bön especially anxious to have for comparison specimens deseribed in Pal. Sinica C.V. 3 /rodents/ C II 3 and C Vv : /figa/. Also be shall be very glad if we can have as a loan the original specimens of Hacacous anderssoni. In general we are desirous to have all type specimens for compar sould it be possible to make cast of the importent types end if necoessary let the Survey share the expenses? The Survey will be able to return the courtesy by sending to Upsala other jga or casts of the fosslls whleh we are collecting 1f so desired by rof. Viman. ; Tours very sincerely, Nong Wen haoc.
