DR. HERB. MUELLER Tel. Add. Sunglin Codes used :—A.B.C. öth & 6th, Bentley's, Mosse's Bankers:—The Hongkong & Shanghai Bank Corp. Telephone: East 3596. Professor J,.G.Andersson COstasiatiska Samlingarna Sveavägen 65 0463. 56, Pei-Ho-Yen February 18th, 1929. Tung= Hua-Men PEKING (CHINA) STOCKHOLM Dear Professor Andersson, ; I have to thank you very much for your kind letter dated ihe 2lst of November lest, The letter arrived here whilst I was away in Nanking where I stayed for nearly two months, a rather trying, but in other ways very interesting affair. In the meantime Mr. Rittmueller who has become a partner of mine as to the Kansu Pottery has shown and given to Dr.Hedin a com- plete set of photographs which Dr.Hedin intended to forward to H.R.H., the Crown- prince, I am certain thet these photographs will be turned over to you and I am very pleased to tell you on Mr. Rittmueller's as well as on my behalf that you may keep them and even publish those which are of interest to you, provided that you refer to them as belonging to The Sunglin Collection, Peking, AS I was away most of the time, I met Mr.Karlbeck only once here and a second time at Shanghai. He seemed very much interested in several objects I showed him here, but the time at the disposal of both of us was to short for any deals. I am learning with great interest that Frofessor Siren is coming out again and I am looking with pleasure forward to meet him here, You know how life is in Peking and how rare are the occasions to meet somebody of real interest in and knowledge of Chinese arch&eology and art. We have at present here Professor Jaekel = formerly of Greifswald university and now of Canton where he is connected with the Sun Yatsen University and the Geological Survey of Kuangtung and Kuangsi. Prof Jaekel has a theory quite of his own as to the origin and development of Chinese bronze art which he believes to have started only in the Han dynasty and not to have been developed to what we are calling Chou art before the 3rd century of our era. I saw Dr .V.K. Ting the other day at Professor Grabau's and heard from him that excavations are to be started this spring at Anyanghsien, the place where the incised bones and tortoise shellg have come from. On the other. . hand, very little activity is shown in prgserging later art. On the contrary, temples and other monuments are constantly plundered and even systematically broken down, The Huang-sze is now only a heap of ruins with not a single statue left and the temple-walls are painted black, I hear the same sad story from Taiyuenfu end even from villages and towns in Southern Shantung. As to Scythlan bronces, I have only a few left et present, but I expect to get some in spring and will show them to Frof,. Siren, Otherwise there is little to report and life is getting duller and duller in 011 Thanbalig. I should like to hear of any new publications in vour country referring to Scy- thian or Kanso objects. How are your publications proceeding? Hoping to hear from you and with best wishos for 1029 I am, dear Professor, Yours very sincerely,
Stäng
