Å 7 det b, I am exceedingly älad to learn from your letter about the new branches of the Geological Survey. 0617 malin provinces viz., the Pontian, the homestead of the true Scythians on the northern shore of the B lack Sea where they came into contact with the Greek culture, thus developing a perplexing mixed art as deseribed by Minns, the Ananino province west of the Ural mountains, the Altai-Minussinsk province and the Suiyuan province, which is the term I am going to propose for the Sino-Mongolian frontier where de- veloped a little-known but very interesting nomad art whieh is more or 1688 Sinisized. It seems as if the nomadic influence upon the Han art has been very strong but on the other hand Chinese influences are also very apparent within the steppe nomad area. I think I have already mentioned to you in previous letters that the Sha Ching period of Kansu contains things of the Suiyuan type. In fact, it is this discovery which has forced me into surveying the whole "Secythlian" question. I take the liberty of sending you, under separate cover, Professor Almgren”s volume,"Hällristningar och Kultbruk," At the same time I herewith includ e some remarks written down when reading this volume which is unfortunately in Swedish. I will be very glad to know your opinion about the possible parallels in the Far Bast to the phenomena described by Almgrens. . Thank you ever so much for your very great kindness in sending me the Cyprea shells from Japan. I hope to be able to sond you very soon Dr, Odhner”s report on all the Cyprea material in hig hands. Yours very truly,
