Vv bv a O046. Stockholm den 1lj Juli 1928 Copy Dr. Davidson Slack, Stockholm Dear Dr, Black, In the interest of a complete and definite understanding concerning the partly complicate problems which we have discussed during the last two days, I take this occasion to summarize my view-point with reference to these questions, In 1925, before my departure from Ohina we outlined, you and I, in collaboration with the Director of the Geologicål Survey, a scheme för paleontological and arecheological field-work in Chinese Furkestan, tne sosts to be carried, two thirds by me and one third by you. Later on the instltution which provides the funds for your part offered eventäally to take upon them as myech as hali of the cost of the whole enterprise. The plan for our joint field-work was confirmed at the meeting held Oct. 22, 1926 in the Anatomical departement of the P.U.M.C., the gentlinen present being H.R.H., the Crownprinee of Sweden, Dr. Houghton, yourself, Dr. Wong, the Director of the Geological Survey, the Swedish Minister to Peking Mr. O. Ewerlöf, Mr, A, Lagrelius and the undersigned, Only some few wake after the said meeting Dr. Sven Hedin arrived in Peking for the purpose of organizing a selentific expedition into Sentral Asia, Considering the close connection between you and me I succeeded in persuading Dr, Hedin at an early stage of his preparatims to make his planssfrankly and completely known to you. Dr. Hedin”s scientific program comprised amengst other things extensive areheological reconnalssance carried out from his preperatory camel-caravan, and eventually at a later stage by means or airplanes,

DoY6, As it seemed in the early spring of 1927 Dr, Hedins expedition promised to become a most valuable reconnaissance for our more detailed field-work and I specially wish to recolleet how generously Dr. Hedin offered At put his results with reference to sites etc. art our deésposal. However, by no feault on Dr, Hedin”s side, an opposition movement against his enterprise arose in nationalistic circles in Peking, and he was forced to accept very severe terms embodying the ineclusion in this party of numerous Ohinese seientists and reducing to a minimum his hopes for being able to obtain for Sweden & set of the arecheological collections, You will certainly remember how I at our fairwell meeting in Peking in the late spring of last year, pointed out bow severely the opposition movement 2agalnst Hedin”s expedition had affected my own possibilities for golng into Central Asia, special with reference to the exeedingly reduced possiplilities of getting any part of the material granted to a&a foreign museum, Furthermore, as ling as Dr, Hedin is in the field with a strong andeompetent staff of arecheologists, foreign and Chinese, I feel that it would not - in the interest of scientifie researen to prepare a second archeological field-party to the same area, Evidently it is most desirable to wait until the return of the Hedin expedition in order to learn at least the general nature of his archeological discoveries before Ii ambark upon a field enterprise, the conditions of which have been in every way fundamentally changed by the entering in the field of the Hedin önpedatlana I very ådeply regret that these circumstances, which have been fear beyond my control, have so S$undamentally affected the possibllities of my paricipation that I must respectfully ask for some kind of revision of our original understanding, a modification which I think can take

I sincerely hope that you will recognize the offer just made as a most earnest effort of offering my assistance under fundamentally changed circumstances to a friend and collaborator whose faithfulness and inspiration I have learnt to appresaciate as one of my principal galns in the Far East. I wish to take advantage of this oceasion in order to express my very strong belief not only in Central Asia, but in eastern China , Cnihli and neighbouring provinces, as most promising fields for palemt logical research along the lines in which you are specially interested. I am fully convinced that the Chow Kou Tien cave find offers the best possibilities for discovering early hominid remains and at the same time thb Tertliary area along the Peking-Hankow railway presenstsa to my mind the best chances for finds of early anthropblås in Bastern | Asia. If my partleipation 18 considered of any value, I will be quite willing to spend £ c0urtle e8 months as your field collaborator in order to prove the soundness of my optimism by locating the longed for localities $$ Tertiary mammals. /signea/ Very truly yours J.G. Andersson
