However, by no fault on Dr. Hedin”s sida, an opposition movement against his enterprise arose in nationalistiec circles in Peking, and : he w-s forced to accept very severe terms änbödyd st the inclusion in fris party of numerous Chinese scientists and reducing to a& minimun 1is hopes for being able to obtaln for Sweden a set of the archeological collections, You will certainly remember how I at our fairwell meeting in Peking in tne late spring of last year pö&nted out how severely the opposition moverent against Hedin'”s expedition had affected my own possibilities for going into Central Asia, spechal with reference to the exeedingly reduced possibilities of getting any part of the material granted to a foreign museum, Furthersmore, as long as Dr, Hedin is in the field with a strong andcompetent staff of areheologists, foreign and Chinese, I feel that it would not be in the interest of scientific researen to prepare a second archeological fleld-party to the same area, Evidently 1t i& most desirable to wait until the return of the Hedin expedition in order ta learn at least the general nature of his archeological discoveries befor: I embark upon a field enterprise, the conditions of whieh have been in every way fundamentally changed by the entering in the field of the Hedin egpedition.,. Copy Stockholm den 114 Juli 1928 Dr, Davldsom Black, Stockholm Dear Dr. Black, In the interest of a complete and definite understanding concerning the partly complicate problems which we have discussed during the last two days, I tale this occasion to summarize my view-polnt with reference be thema Questions. In 1925, before my departure from China we outlined, you end I, in collaboration with the Dibeotor of the Geological Survey, a scheme for paleontological end archeological field-work in Ohinese Turkestan, the costs to be carried, two thirds by me and one third by you. Later on the institution which provides the funds for your part offered eventually to take upon them &s much as half of the eost of the wnole enterprise. The plan for our joint field work was confirmed av the megting held Oct. 22, 1926 in the Anatomical departement of tne PU. M.C., the gentlemen present belng H.R.H., the Crownprince of Sweden, Pr. Houghton, yourself, Dr. Wong, the Director of the Geological Survey, the Swedish Minister to Peking Mr. O| Ewerlöf, Mr, A.,Lagrellus and the undersigned. Only some few weeks after the sakbd meeting Dr, Sven Hedin arrived in Peking for the purpose of organizing a scientific expedition into Central Asia, Considåering the olose connectlon between you and me I succeeded in persuading Pr, Hedin at an early state of his preparations to make his plans frankly and completely known to you. | Dr, Hedin”s scientific program comprised amongst other things extensive archeological reconnaissance carried out from his preperatory camel-caravan, and eventually at a later stage by means of girplanes:.

ARR beyond my control, have so fundamentally affected the possibilities of my participation that I must respectfully ask for some kind of vavislen of our original understanding, a modificetion which I think can take place along one or the other of the two following lines: 1: That our agreement för finanelal and seientific cooperation be mentaine but our departure postpyoned until after tne return of the Hedin expedition, or 2; that my cooperation as arecheologist be witnhärawn and the underteking limited to your paleontological and antropological work. In such a case I would be guite willing to enlist as your field collaborator for a limited period say half a year in order to assist you in a general geological reconnaissanee for the purpose of discovering fossillferous sites in the Tertiary deposits of Central Asia. I sincerely hope that you will recognize the offer just made as a most earnest effort of offering my assistance under fundeamentally changed circumstances to a& friend and gollaborater whose faitnfulness and inspiration I have learnt to apprepciate as one of my principal galns in the Far East, I wish to take advantage of this occasion bn order to express my very strong belief not only in Central Asia, but in eastern China, Chihli and neighbouring provinces, as most promising fields for paleonto logical research along the lines in whienh you are specially interested. I am fully convinced that the Chow Kou Tien cave find offers the best possibilities for dåscovering early hominid remains and at the same time the Tertlary area along the Peking-Hankow railway presensts to my nånd the best chances for finds of early anthropoids in Eastern Asia. If my participation is considered of any value, I will be quite willing to spend a couple of months as your field collaborator in order to prove the soundness of my optimism by locating the longed for localities of Tertiary mammals. /signed/ Very truly yours J.G.
