RA S = SEEK TORRE Dear Professor Andörsson, s : = S : | S S I thank you very-much för your kind lötter of May 18th. In the meantime, I hope, you-will have regchedgour. old "Höimat" and met your fömily and friends. Fe miss you here and the more.so as nearly everybödy. bas gong ör” 15 pröparing to 80- 5 Euommel t00,. Wang Kuo-wei has drowned Himself in the sumsersPalate lake and life is very dull herö. Two weeks ago everybody expected TO sök the Mukdeékites 7 leaving the fown any day, but thöy häva recovered to some extsnt. and are trying to come 5; tö an understanding with the others. But I am convinced that the others, Nöw including Yen Hsi-shan, will continue to drive the old marshall out of shanheaikvan. Railway conmnec- tions are very bad again, ånd mostly for this reågon, therese ars very few interesting objects on the market. On the other hand, things are coming out of the Palace again, but mostly pictures and porcelains which do not interest you very much. I was travelling last month in Shantung province: and visited inter alia Tsingtao, Weihsien, Tsingchoufu and Tsinenfu. The Tonditions vifi the railway line are appalling, the status of the poverty stricken people rightout unimaginable. The only really interesting thing I saw, was a factory in Woihsien which is turning out bronces by the hundreds, mostly on Japanese ordres. They are working in close comsetion with a number of Japanese dealers and are getting drawings, photographs and even genuine pieces from them and are working according to model. I was There 15 years ago and the way these people have improved upon their methods is really astonishing, They are turning out very good work and guarantee the patina to be unimpairable by hard brush even and boling water. I.made a small collection showing raw patina, polished patina, quicksilver patina and bronces inlaid with gold and silver as well as gilded bronces. They are producing mostly Chou- and Han-types, smaller and bigger pieces, but Six Dynasties gilded Bronce figurines besides. It is some slight reassurance that I could not find a single "Scythian" piece amongst the products and this type seemed to be absolutely unknown to the owner of the works. In Tsingchoufu they are forging very rude stone sculptures, in Tsinanfu the same and early tomb figures, especial- ly of Han-type, horses etc. Han-reliefs may bee bought at very low prices, starting with 30 3 and ranging up to 100 $, all forgeries of course, A set similar to Wuliangszå is on the market in Peking, 18 stones in all and also forgeries, at least in my opinion. I am expecting some very interesting objects which have been found at Khotan and are on "Their way here via Mongolia. Amongst them are two wooden doors with paintings of two guardians on them which are said to come from a Han tomb whieh can be dated by an inscrip- tion found in the same tomb. I acquired lately some very interesting big stones, the most intersting being a sevon-storied pagoda, more than seven feet high, with scenes from the life of Buddha in a very early style, 4th or 5th century. I will send you photograpns later on. I further got quite a number of -small objects, but nothing exciting amongst them, /I am very interested to hear that your monograph on Scythian objects is progressing. Lou & Co. had quite 'a collection, but they may have sold them. Zumorfo- poulos has a great number, so have M.Marcel Guerin (Paris), M.Raymond Koechlin (Paris), Charles Rutherston (Bradford, England), M.Jean Sauphar (Paris), A.3toclet (Bruxeåles), MeCharles Vignier (Paris) and others Afhonever I find here any objects of this kind, I will let you know with greatest pleasure. At the same time, I will try to find out the names of collectors here and abroad, but I cannot promise you any results.
