0312 SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION FREER GALLERY OF ART WASHINGTON 25, D. C. 26 April 1948 Dear Dr. Andersson, The editors of the Encyclopaedia Britannica have asked me to prepare a new version of the article on Chinese pottery and porcelsin for a fortheoming edition, and I am taking the liberty of turning to you for some assistance in the matter of photographs. As the present article was written some twenty years ago it is only natural that it should now be considerably out of date; and I think you will agree that this defect is most noticable in the section on early pottery. Hobson devoted to the pre-Han wares some 450 wordäs, and showed illustration of 12 prehistoric pots which hardly do justiée to the diversity of the available material. The Britannica is very strict in the matter of space, but I have persuaded them to allow mne some 1500 words on the pre-Han section, and I should like to illustrate more types of pots in the prehistoric (and extra-historic) group as well as some examples of Shang and Chou wares which are now not shown at all. In preparation for this work, I have gone over your paper "Researches into the Prehistory of the Chinese" EMFEA £15 as well as the other publications to which you refer in the course of tnat work. It occurs to me that I could do no better than to use some typical illustrations of the wares studted by you; and I wonder if you could let me have some ph otographs for that purpose. The following list is made up from a careful study of your published material, and I have tried to make it cover the field as much as possible and at the same time keep the list small. There is some doubt as to whether they will allow me to use as many illustrations as I should like, but I am asking for these as in the hope that as many as possible will be reproduced. You will note that I have selected the three Pan-shan urns from the Pien-chia Kou grave group; the Pan-shan type is now go well known in general that it occurred to me it might be of special interest to use examples from this excavated grave. I do not know where the ones now illustrated came from except that they were in a certain Rosenbach collection and are now in the Buffalo Museum of Science in this country.

0850 to venture an opinion on the basis of the description and the little bit of clay scraped from the bottom which I am sending along with it? I can assure you that just because I bought it, I haveeno interest in merely defending it. I want to find out what it is. It involves no great monetary value anyway, no more than one would have paid for any small souvenir of China. Whether or not you think it is a fake, I should be much interested to know if you have any information on the faking of this kind of thing for the market. Do they do much of it? Does one have to be especially on one's guard as with Sung and later ceramics? Where do they do it? Anything you can tell me along this line will be of great interest. Thanking you in advance for your help on this Britannica problem, and with thanks agaln for your courtesies when I visited Stockholm in 1938, I remain with all good wishes, Sincerely yours, —Jra 4. John A. Pope P. 5. Ne are all looking forward with much pleasure to Professor Karlgren's visit to this country next month. I wish it were going to be possible for you to accompany him.

While I know it is impossible to give a definite opinion on the basis of a photograph, I am sending along a print of a small pot I purchmased in Peking in 1946 when I was on duty in China with the U. S. Marine Corps. I bought it for a neolithtiec pot, but the more I look at it, and the more I look overryour published material, the more I am inelined to doubt its authenticity. Would you care
