successive stages of the ceramic art of Fukien. With striking persistence and zeal Vr. Farley had for years and in a systematic way collected sherds to the muamber of tens of thousands, a research material entirely without parallel, It has long been well known that Fukien province in ancient ti. mes had ceramic centres of their own producing wares, very famous among col- lectors, In these kiln districts Mr. Farley has undertaken extensive researches and collections throwing much light upon those early ceramic industries. Also with the folk-lore of Fukien, Mr. Farley is well familiär and he supplied me with very valuable information. There is one more thing that I like to add, when outlining Mr. Farley”s achievements. He has travelled very extensively, not only in Ameri- ca and Asia, but also all over Europe and The Near East, where he made him. self well acquainted with the important archaeological excavations, now go- ing on in The Near Orient. Summing up my impression of Mr. Farley, he is a devoted student with a very wide range of knowledge and experience. His research work in Fukien province is a piece of enthusiastic and most remarkable pioneer work. Malcolm Farley certainly deserves all possible financial support when he is now writing out his results for publication.

At newysars time 1937, when I was excavating in the Hongkong sites in cooperation with Mr. F. Schofield, I heard this gentleman speak with very high estimate about the archaeological research work, carried out by Professor Malcolm F. Farley of the Fukien Christian University, Fhen my field-work in the Hongkong territory was completed,T took the occasion when en route to Shanghai to spend some days at the Fukien Christian University, studying ur. Farley”s collections and under- taking vory instructive excursions under his leadership. 0t 18 only a very sober statement when I say that my stay with Mr. Farley and the daily intercourse with him in his vast collection and in the field, forsed one of the most inspiring experiences of my life. I found a vast dwelling house entirely packed with archaeologi. cal collections, the bringing together of which smat have cost Mr. Farley very e hardships. In his collections there were many specimens, very rare and of noticable beauty, but the most striking feature of the collec- tion waa the endless series of related specimens, 11lustrating fully the protohistorio and early historical archaeology of Fukien province. Consi- dering that this fen, sräotidelly. unknown, from an archaeological point of view Vr. Farley”s collection must be said to form a very valuable con- tribution to the archaeology of Southern China. In the vicinity of Foochow, the provinoial capital, Mr. Farley had followed two hospital constructions, which revealed complete sectiona and thes section: eral tens of feet ranging from Han to modern tim in thicknoss, consisted mainly of pot-sherds giving a sarvellous record of
