- — = Ul APPENDIX "B" anta THE MUSEUM of FAR EASTERN ANTIQUITIES (ÖSTASIATISKA SAMLINGARNA) STOCKHOLM. SWEDEN. DIRECTOR: DR. J. G. ANDERSSON Dear Dr. Andersson: I reså with the utmost pleasure and interewt your letter from Hongkong, snd I look forward with much satis- faction to your eventusl coming to Indo-China, You may be sure to find here; and-especislly at the Ecole Francsaise, the wWwermest welcome and every fecility to cerry out your researches. The- question! is now to decide whet sört of archaeologicsl. site wouldbe most snitable for.your fiéld work end might yield sufficient material to allow you to keep a reasonable number of duplicates for the Stockholm Museum, Archaeglogicsl sites dating back to the Han period are abundant in Tonkån and in Northern Annan (Thanh-hoa Province), and heve been repeatedly excavated by the Ecole Francaise since 1926. Dr. Goloubew has already written a lengthy peper on the bronze civilization of Dong-son and has enother one in preparation. On the other hand, you pbobably know that Dr. Jense ie now present in Indo-Chine, working on the same sites with the aid of French funds. Under these con- ditions I do not think it would be wiee to advise you to take up the Han period as the main object of your study, and after having discussed the matter with our praehistorian, Mlle Dr. Colani, I should rather propose that you devote your time to prehistoric reseserches, sa field which is fer from being ex- haustead, In Northern Tonkin, and on both sides of the border of the Chinese province of Kweangsi, there are limestone hills which have not yet been systematically explored and which might yield importent discoveries. In quite another direction, there is an interesting problem to be solved: Pelaeolithic culture (Hosbinhian) has been found in Southern Tonkin and Northern Annam, and Dr. van Stein Callenfels hes found the same culture in the Mslay peninsula. There are good reasons to believe that it also existed in Southern Indo-China on the territory of present Cambodia, where limestone hills have never been properly explored. So much for palseolithic culture. Along the coast of Anneam, there is a series of mounds, mostly shell-deposits or kjokkenmoddinger, some of

Ok? b which have been dug up, some others have not. And in the sand-ånnes of Central Ånnam, one site hag yielded msterisl which seems to indicate maritime relations with India and China: there is probably more than one site of. that kind along the coast. The ebove will give you a rough ides of what you might be able to find here. I wonder whether this will be sufficient to attract you. Indo-China is not so rich as China in archaeologicsl remains but in the present conjanc- ture, Work is certainly easier here than in any other country in the Fer East, thenks to the peaceful conditions prevail- ing here, and also to the facilities of all kinds which the Ecole Francaise -is:in a position to offer. In the sincere hope that you will make up your mind and :honour Indochimese srchaeology with your precious colla- boration,; I am, = Dear Dr. Andersson, - Aours very sincerely, (Signed) George Coedes ECOLE FRANCAISE D'EXTREME ORIENT HANOI. 1e 19 October. 1937. -
