AES fora.” whom I net here once in Honskong. This collection is not very large but it is very beautiful, consisting of magnificent stono axes, rings and other snall objects of AR ;holite, quartz and other material and in addi- tion somo specimonb of pottery exhibiting several of geometric patterns, among them the fanciful "double F" pattern. After we had stväxed. these different collections we began our exeursions., The Governor had kindly put at our disposal his Inspection Motor Launch, the"Brittania" on fmmex /”rard whbeh we had excellent accommodations, including couches and sleep- ing berths. One of the excursion days we took a motor car ride over the Territory," the mainland part of the Colony. In this way s0=0a110å ' We visited a large number of si I have got a clear vision of their uniform features, representing in fact a literal culture settled upon an water level. old beach lying four to six meters above the present As I have stated before I never expected to get more than a duplicate set of the material collected during our joint exoursions, It soon became apparent that Mr. Schofield”s idea was to allow me only some rather worthless sherds of pobtery. I felt rather downoast about it es I found it very hard to tell him franily what I thought about the whole things Ch this moment my secretary, Miss Borf, with the possibilitios of a eharm- ing young person, interfered in a Very gontle way and with remurkably fa- /AYovrable results. What was actually lacking here in the earlier arehaeological worl was a careful recording of the finds with reference to a datum level. This we have stabbed in a site at Shek Pek on Lantanu Island. 2 At our second visit to this site, I established a one meter network, covering the whole part of the site which could be excavated in the near t Tature and within t rizontal eobsdinanse ell finds were carefully vel bd registered in tho gale 1 to 100, at the same tino as tholr bomisoRtal posi- tion with reference to the datum lovel was carefully measured. early stage of these excavations two human slmlls, podyiy preserved, still guite Aistinguishable, were found under sircumstances clearly proving that those human remains actually belonged to what I have named "The Hongkong Cultur Later on an imperfect but interesting skeleton was unearthed, associated with a slate spear-hesad in tho pel- vie region and some hig mussels at the place of the head. This burial was recorded on the scale 1 to 10 in the same way as we have done with ” mx the Honan and Kansu burials. Furthermore, I have surveyed the whole beach where this site occurs its immediate hinterland on the -seale 1 to 5.000. YThe original of this survey will be brought home to Sweden but a copy of the same is to be at the full disposal of Mr. Sehofield and I sincerely hope that the other more important sites will be surveyed in a similer manner as thås survey showed elearly the im- portance of such topographical maps for a scientifie discussion of the way in Under the existing circumstances I held it most proper not to try ieh the people of thé ancient Hongkong eulture lived. to make myself any duplicate collection on the spot but as a courtesy in recognition of the service we have undoubtedly rendered in showing (ina metkog of surveying and the necessity of abandoning entirely un- scientific excavatlon as done earlier in the Lamma site. I have f sie "ere asked Mr. Schofield to present to the Museum of Far Eastern anti- auities such a duplicate set out of his rich material as he considers himself able to spare for us. It will likely take him somdtino vefore he has worked through the material sufficiently to select this dupli- cate set. Consequently Mr, Schofield”s contribution will be sent from Hongkong with the Swedish motor ship passing through the Colony in March sand his collection will be contained in a box marlied No. 4.

Ro eh AA za To the Swedish China Resoarech Ryor tge I herewith have the honour to ET to the Cåmmitteo my second re- port which I have teken the liberty to write in English äs I have now an efficient English speaking seeretary. Accompanied by my secretary, Miss Dorf, and Chuang - one of my servants who worked with me in Kansu, I arrived in Henfikong January Sth and was s408t corälally received by Mr. W. Schofield, the Hons Hmateur archaeolo- gist who is now alone responsible. for arehaeological research in this —ylace since the death of Father Finn. One of. the first days we vi d Ricel Hall, a Catholic rest-house connected with the University and saw there the so-called "Government Collection" comprising material collected by Father Finn in the large Lemma site with the support of the colonial government. One of the fol- lowing days we went to the Regionsl Seminary at Aberåeen on the South side of the Honskong Island and saw there the very important material Jesvit collected by te=dmmsde Father Finn privatoly and father s a legacy from him. Both these collections are very much the same kind, consisting for the larger part of pottery decorated with the geometrie patterns which /”Yorm one of the ehief characteristics of the Lamma culture. In addition there are stone NS several of them shouldered, scqnatholite rings, quartz rings and/knall but interesting number of bronze objects, mostly arrow-points, slicktly bent spear-heads, celts, etc. In Father Finn”s private collection re are a couple of sinple bronze vekäels, very fragnontary, but destenst it is not ouite clear whothor these two vessels were found with tho rest of the things. Another very interesting colloc- pt here in Hongkong in the Catholic Cathedral. It comes from ty of Swatow and 1s made by an Italian missionary, father Magliont
