SHANG PERIOD (about 1500-1200 B.C.) $65.Bronze Tripod Vessel with two vertical loop handles, Semi-globular in shape.Decorated with a register of designs brought out by a black ground,whiech may have been produced by ovide of manganese (only a microscopical examination could deter- mine what this substance is.) The register consists of three unites of design,each forming in the center a monster with eyes elearly indicated.The three feet the most artistic feature of thi: bronze vessel;each is in the shape of an inverted birä(turn ves- sel upside down to visualize it ) with tail crest.There is an inseription consisting of three characters inside of the vessel made in the cast.The style of the characters,the decipherment of — whieh requires a long comparative study,is that of the Shang period (about I500-1200.E.C.).Workmanship and style comfirm this conelusion.It is a highly artistic piece graceful in shape and outline and is one of the most important and artistic pieces of Shang bronze that has been my pleasure to examine.Its condition is most perfect.
