NL DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY PEKING UNION MEDICAL COLLEGE 0083 March töth 1926 PEKING, CHINA. Dear Pr. Andersson; Sinee writing yåbu da Feb 9th last, much has happened, Mr;Embree has been here for the nast week and has now started back for America = though whether he will be able to make his sailing at Tientsin or not it is hard to say. I am happy to be able to tell you that he is almost as enthusiastic over our Turkestan sglan as we are ourselves, But this does not mean that he will be able to convince the Rockefeller Fouhbkdation Board and get the necessary funds, It does mean however that we have a ströng ally and & good-friend who will do his utmost for us = and with good chances of success I think, The Board meeting does not take place till May so it will be foarly 8 wevgks before we gan have definite word. É Mr .Embree wished to know what would be the estimated amount needed from the -Foundation för the Expedition. Ås I had had no furtnerword from you on the subject, I took the figure you suggested last spring, Viz. DD, circa $30,000 Mex and enlarged it somewhat to cover eventualities and proposed U,S.Gold $20,000 as being about the sum HecCessary for-ar--föird share contributhbön for the two year programme, I hope I have not erred on the wrong side in making this rough estimate, but if you can raise double that amount as we contempläåted last spring I should think the total would enable three of us to carry on för some time in tne field, If you can conveniently do so I shöuld be glad if you could let me have a general statement on the subject of the total estimated cost. I am sending on all the details I can to Mr,Embree so that he may have them before: the-Trustees-meeting. If the Trustees approval can be obtained I hope to be able to arrange to be freed fröm teaching next year so that it may be possible to get out my report on the Kansu material this autumn and thus be ready to go Intothe-fleld in Dec-1926-or Jan 1927; I would eertainly be glad if we could arrange to start this year because the sooner we can begin the better it would be from my point of view. | Dr Ting was in Peking last week and we had a great chat. He and Dr, Wong. showed Mr,Embeee over the Survey =» from which by the way Dr.Ting is now retiring. He has been able to get $100,000 for new Survey buildings and additional funds to carry the Survey's Work for the next three years. He feels that now he can retire and leave Dr. Wong in charge since the Survey is now over the critical period of its existance. He was bemoaning the fact that he had not heard anything from you in months so I showed him your November letter and he was much interested. Dr. .Grabau I am sorry to say is not at all well just now. He had Mr, Embree ,Dr.Wong and myself to lunch last Sunday and next day became ill. The trouble has been diagnosed as gall stones. He is supposed to be resting in bed but I wish he would come to the PUMC for care and treatment, Tne political situation is still normal = that is tå say in chaos = but I have given up thinking of suenh trifles as civil wars. They are largely localized in eastern China and should not interfere unduely with our plans, Roy Andrews is-expected back toward the end of the month and expects to carry on this year witnout difficultys

Do write me when you get a few minutes time anå& let me have your revised estimates of costs, etc. I may add that Mr,Embree is personally strongly in favour of establishing a research institute here to carry on work in the broad field of human blology, But that projeet will necessarily take: some time to develop. . With most cordial regards to you and Mrs Andersson in which Mrs Black joins, I remain as ever, Very Ssincerely yours; NNE
