Mould-made relief tablet depicting the part of the Roman founding myth where the she-wolf suckles the baby twins Romulus and Remus, after having found them at the banks of the river Tiber. The scene is set in a schematically rendered cave, the so-called Lupercal (derived from the latin "lupa", meaning she-wolf) at the southwest foot of Rome's Palatine Hill, surrounded by a tree. The twins were subsequently found by the shepherd Faustulus, who took them in as his sons. Romulus would later go on to become the legendary founder of the city of Rome and its first ruling king, with many of Rome's oldest legal, political, religious, and social institutions attributed to him. The Lupercal was also the focal point for the archaic pastoral festival called Lupercalia, celebrated annually at the foot of the Palatine and at the Forum. There are traces of paint, mostly red, on the relief.
