Wide, moulded rim; flaring neck; flattened shoulder; piriform body, tapering downwards; one raised, vertical handle with central rib and lateral rotelles from rim to shoulder and two raised, horizontal ones at shoulder; disc base; concave underside. Red clay; black glaze; added white and red; incisions. Outside of rotelles reserved; reserved groove at junction between neck and shoulder; reserved panel on shoulder, opposite handle – at base of neck alternating black and red tongues; below, in the centre of the scene, Herakles fighting with the Nemean lion, flanked by Athena to the left and Hermes to the right, both seated on stools; above the fighting couple Herakles’ sword, mantle and quiver are suspended; furthest out on both sides of the scene a standing youth in short chiton carrying a club – the one to the right also has a bow and a quiver hanging from the club; below a black band; the reserved panel continues on body where it is framed to the left and to the right by a vertical branch of ivy and by bands; in the centre Peleus and Thetis wrestling; the latter tries to flee to the right, her hands raised above her haid; a small pantheress bites Peleus’ shoulder; on both sides of Peleus and Thetis a woman with uplifted hands, probably a nereid; Peleus has long hair and wears a red diadem, his lower body is draped in a himation; the skin of the women is white, they have red diadems and decorated, pleated chitons and mantles; in the background a tree with long branches, continuing up on shoulder; black base line beneath figures; below a border of connected palmettes and ivy leaves; further below two red bands; black tongues on lower body; red band at junction between body and base; reserved band on lower part of base; underside reserved; inside of handles and handle panels reserved. Graffitti on underside: two ligatures between § and ; two arrow-like signs; §À followed by two short, dividing strokes and § /.../ (see picture).
