Top of mouth, inside of handle, neck and shoulder reserved; on shoulder one row of bars and one of rays; on body a meander between bands; below cross-hatching framed by lines; below a band of dotted lozenges and a lattice band – all on buff ground; four wet-incised bands on lower body; edge of base and underside reserved.

A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria.
