Reddish clay; black glaze with metallic sheen; added white paint. On spout egg-pattern flanked by waves; on each rotelle a rosette; outside of handle black; on neck a female head with white skin, wearing a kekryphalos, facing right – flanked by palmettes and tendrils; egg pattern on shoulder; on body a winged, female figure walking to the right – behind her is an altar; she is flanked by scrolling tendrils and and large palmette fans; beneath handle a palmette; below this a meander, two times interrupted by a rectangle with a cross and four chevrons; lower body black; resting surface and centre of underside reserved.

An oinochoe (pl. oinochoai, alternatively spelled oenochoe/oenochoai) is a single-handled vessel, more specifically a jug, usually taller than it is wide. They come in many different shapes and forms, with variations in profile, mouth-type and handle-form. They functioned as pouring vessels for wine and have taken their name from the Greek words “oinos” (wine) and “cheo” (I pour). Miniature versions were often placed in children’s graves.
