According to the Békésy catalogue the dating of the vase is 1500 BC, which contradicts the dating according to E. Küster (9th-8th century BC). According to M. von Heland in Georg von Békésy’s Antiksamling, 1974, p 76, it is possible that the presence of the snake suggests an association to the temple of Asklepios, god of medicine and healing, which is known in Bergama during the Hellenistic period. Possibly the vase is a votive gift dedicated to Asklepios.
