Brownish clay; black glaze, partly misfired to red; ochre wash. Mouth top, inside of handle, edge of base and underside reserved; egg-and-dot pattern at base of neck; a pattern of connected palmettes on shoulder; right below shoulder on one side of body a border of meanders and dotted saltier squares; on body Orpheus with uplifted arms, fleeing from an invisible attacker to the left; he is wounded by a spear, still hanging in the right thigh and holds his lyre in his right hand; he wears a wreath and a pleated cloak; below a border of ivy leaves and dots.

A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria.
