Etnografiska Museets vänförening

The collection is an addition to the museum´s pool of contempoary Native American pottery from the USA Southwest, from the Pueblo cultures. This pool of pottery of recent times is complemented by the museum´s quite large amount of somewhat older, ca 1880 - 1910, Pueblo Indian pottery, see primarily collection 1904.19. (which is furthermore complemeted by the museum´s collections of Precolumbian pottery, e.g. from the Anasazi) from North America.
The said older older pottery, to a large extent made for an outside market (e.g. collectors and tourists), began to develop when the railway, "the iron horse", in the end of the 1800s came to the Southwest and with it came anthropologists, artists, collectors, galleries, and tourists who appreciated the many different American Indian peoples and who directly/ indirectoly supported the traditional crafts of the Native Americans. In the museum´s North America exhibition, opened in October 2008, there are sections with Precolumbian potteryas well as older and more recent arts and crafts pottery from the Pueblo cultures.
