"The swamp folk's art of medicine is based partly on natural and partly supernatural medicines. In case of fever, it is common to cup the sick person, thus use a natural medicine. The cupping takes place in such a way that someone makes an incision with a razor (Fig. 46) under the patient's temple, after which a horn with a pierced tip is placed over the incision. The comrade now sucks heavily in the tip of the horn, whereby the air is thinned in its interior (pl. 64). He then closes the hole in the tip of the horn with a little wax, whereby the horn sucks on the patient's skin due to the air thinning (pl. 65). Through the thinning of the air, the blood is drawn out into the horn and with the blood follows, according to the beliefs of the swamp inhabitants, the evil that caused the fever. The cup horns (straws) are of lechwe- or sitatunga horns; one (Fig. 183) of the two depicted here consists of an 18.5 cm. long sitatunga horns with pierced tip. Around the tip appears a spherical swelling, which has arisen from the wax, which was used to close the hole, which leads to the hollow part of the horn. Fig. 184 shows a 20.5 cm. long straw of lechwe horn. Also on this nozzle are remnants of wax." (p. 301, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
