Råttfälla. Består av ett 32 cm. långt, rörformigt kalebasskal, i vars smalare ände en spänstig gren av ca 160 cm:s längd sätts in. Nära kalebassens främre mynning ska det finnas en galgliknande ställning, som består av två, lodrätt ställda pinnar, på vilkas övre ändar en tredje pinne är fastknuten i vågrät riktning. Mitt under galgen finnes ett hål i kalebasskalet. Genom detta sätts ett 5,5 cm. långt snöre, vid vars övre ände en träpinne fästs; i snörets nedre ände anbringas något lockbete, t. ex. litet torkat kött. Vid grenens spets fästs ett bastsnöre, på vilket en 3,5 cm. lång spärrpinne fästs. Snöret löper genom ett hål i kalebassen och är fästat i ett annat. När fällan skall gillras, böjes grenen, till dess spärrpinnen kan trädas under pinnen och anbringas så att den trycker mot pinnen, vilken därigenom fasthålles i det önskade läget (se bild i Rosens bok). När en råtta rycker i betet drages pinnen nedåt och spärrpinnen frigöres. I samma ögonblick rätar grenen ut sig och drager till snöret, så att råttan fastnar i öglan. "Since the breadwinner cannot always get a noble piece for the family, he often has to settle for simpler meat. e.g. rats, which are caught in rather ingenious traps (Fig. 322). The one pictured consists of a 32 cm. long, tubular gourd shell, in the narrower end (a) of which a resilient branch (b) of 160 cm in length is firmly fitted. Near the front mouth of the gourd is arranged a gallows-like stand, which consists of two, vertically placed sticks {c and d), on the upper ends of which a third stick (e) is fastened in the horizontal direction. In the middle of the gallows there is a hole in the gourd shell. Through this runs a 5.5 cm. long string, to the upper end of which a wooden stick (g) is attached; in the lower end of the string some bait (h) is applied, e.g. little dried meat. Attached to the tip of the branch is a base cord, on which a 3.5 cm. long locking pin (f) is attached. The string runs through a hole in the gourd and is attached to another, as the picture shows. When the trap is to be set, the branch is bent until the locking pin (f) can be threaded under the pin (e) and applied so that it presses against the pin (g), which is thereby held in the desired position (see picture). When a rat pulls on the bait (A), the pin (g) is pulled down and the locking pin (f) is released. At the same moment, the branch (b) straightens out and pulls on the string, so that the rat gets stuck in the loop (i). Rat traps of a similar type occur in East Africa."
