Wirgin, Jan

Jan Christer Wirgin, född den 15 juni 1932, död den 25 september 2020, var en svensk docent i östasiatisk konstvetenskap och tidigare chef för Östasiatiska museet i Stockholm.

Jan Wirgin var son till rådmannen Allan Wirgin (född 1901), och Margit (född Gyllenberg 1903). Han studerade på 1950-talet klassisk kinesisk konsthistoria vid Stockholms högskola och blev fil.lic där 1959. Han blev 1961 indendent på Östasiatiska museet under sinologen Bernhard Karlgren som efterträtt museets grundare Johan Gunnar Andersson. Åren 1966-1967 var Wirgin gästprofessor i kinesisk konsthistoria vid University of Hawaii i Honolulu i USA, och blev 1970 filosofie doktor vid Stockholms universitet med avhandlingen Sung Ceramic Designs. Han var chef för Östasiatiska museet mellan 1981 och 1998.

Wirgin gifte sig 1958 med Margareta Brunnberg, och paret fick en dotter och en son.

Jan Wirgin joined the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm as an assistant curator in the 1950’s. His mentor was Bernhard Karlgren, who at the time was head of the museum. Jan Wirgin later became a curator and between 1981-1998 he was the director of the museum.

For a year Jan Wirgin was Professor of Chinese Art at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu in the mid 1960’s and from 1970 onwards Associate professor at the University of Stockholm. The subject of Wirgin’s Ph. D. in 1970 was on Song ceramic designs. In 1998 the Swedish Government appointed him Professor.

He was the editor of the Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities (BMFEA) for more than twenty years.

As a young man Jan Wirgin travelled extensively and after marrying his wife Margareta in the late 1950’s they both travelled to East Asia – China, India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Borneo, Bali, Singapore – and also in Europe.
