Dear Mr Rowe, We have received your letter concerning Australian Indigenous human remains. As a consequence we have surveyed our relevant collections and registers/archive. This undertaking has been conducted at the Museum of Ethnography and at two other institutions where parts of the relevant collections have been for long time deposited, that is: the Laboratory of Osteology at Stockholm University, and the Museum of Natural History, Stockholm. Three pertinent collections have been identified. As a preliminary result I can report the following. The collections holds: • 6 craniums that partly correspond to the description in the registers (Laurell 1912:1). • 6 craniums that are a part of another collection (Mjöberg 1916:3). • 1 cranium (Wahlberg 1894:5). I hereby confirm that the Museum of Ethnography is willing to return the above mentioned human remains to Australia/ATSIS. The Museum of Ethnography would — after a decision from the Swedish government — give highest priority to such a request. The museum would also welcome all cooperation and efforts to arrange for a secure and respectfull return of the human remains to Australia.
