Ko pi Avskrift BJ.1. Inv., 58.8. J. Sigfrid Edström Stockhölm den 9 april 1958 Stockholm Kungsgatan 33, 12 tr. Stockholm. Hon meddelar följande: "The jacket vest is probably a Sioux of Dakota Indian. It is very elaborate and very few tribes had anything so elegant in beads. The headed things were anklets, armbands or medicine or pipe pockets. The moccasin was probably made by the Arapaho and the pearis are most unusual to have. Beading designs on all things have a sym- bolic value. White backgrounds symbolize ground, zig-zag lines represent snakes etc. Any one wearing a moccasin with zig-zag would believe himself to be protected from snake bite, or so he believed. The Buffalo is the keynote of the Plains Indians culture. They be- lieved that it had great healing powers, especially for wounds from battles. They had secret societies for veomen as weil as men. They believed that the White Buffalo was a great spirit returned to earth. If the medicine man wore the Buffalo horn head piece it had the halv of the animal on it, but the one I have sent to you is a war bonnet, because it has the Eagle feathers. Eagle feathers are worn by warriors and vean that he is mighty. This isn't a great deal of information, but I hope it Will identify what few things we have sent to you. I am trying to interest the people from Suthers Fort Museum into sending to you some of the beautiful baskets and beads etc. from the California Indians. I would suggest that you or someone from the Museum in Stockholm write to them, and ask if they would send some things. They have a great many more things than they are using at the present time." Jag har skrivit igen till.Mrs.
