Dear Dr. Montell, The objects which I sent you.fifvough Helga and Bodil consisted of a little human figure of wax from the Cueva del Aguila near Pahuatlan: and ocotes and maxochils from a very small cave aImds at the summit of a mountain called Chaltzictle nea Tlapacoya about 4 , 5 hours ride 8-E from Necaxa, also in. the Sierra de Puebla. The Cueva del Aguila is on the left bank of the Rio de Pahuatlan about an hour from that plac As the river makes the'boundary between Otdmis an mexicanos (Nahuas) it is a little hard 'to know Who uses it for ceremonies.. It is a narrow cave, going far into the hillside, and a certain distan e ini- an alarming noise is heard probably caused by subterranean waters. In it I found maxochils,' ci- garettesy wax, copål and the remains of hens, all used as offerings. The little figure was clearly used in a ceremony, but whether the person it portrays was to be cured of an illness or to be bewitched I cannot say. The maxochils and ocotes come from a part of the country inhabited exclusively by mexicanos. The "cave" where I found them last May is no more than a slight natural hollow in the rock with no depth at all.
