Amulett i form av ett halsband av glaspärlor med leopardklor och träkors. Exakt vad föremålet användes till eller symboliserade är okänt. Men liksom många smycken från området hade det både syftet att vara dekorativt och att kommunicera med andarnas värld.

Från andarna i de dödas land hämtade kongofolken styrka, skydd och kraften att bota sjukdom och olycka. Halsbandet blandar inhemska och europeiska religiösa symboler. Träkorset är både dikenga—det kongolesiska korset som beskriver kosmos—och ett krucifix från den katolska traditionen. Mellan de tunga glaspärlorna hänger två leopardklor. Leoparden var den politiska maktens främsta symbol och den frammanade styrka i både fysisk och andlig mening.

Like much of the ornaments of the region, it served the dual purpose of being beautiful and communicating with the world of the spirits. From the spirits in the land of the dead, the Kongo took strength, protection and power to cure illness and injury.

The necklace mixes local and European religious symbols. The wooden cross is both a dikenga – the Kongo cross that describes the cosmos – and a crucifix from the Catholic tradition. Between the heavy glass beads hang two leopard’s claws. The leopard was the preeminent symbol of political power, evoking both physical and spiritual strength.
