På mattan finns stora moskén i Mecka med Kaba i centrum, och profeten Muhammeds moské i Medina avbildade. I den nisch som symboliserar riktningen mot Mecka finns en moskélampa. Lampan avbildar dels en klassisk moskélampa, men är också en slags symbol för uppfattningen att ”Gud är himlarnas och jordens ljus”, som det står i Koranen (25:35). En bönematta är en populär souvenir som en pilgrim kan köpa med sig hem. Just den här mattan är en enkel, maskintillverkad matta.

Enligt en känd tradition sade profeten Muhammed att ’renlighet är halva tron’. För att den muslimska tidebönen ska vara giltig måste såväl den bedjande som böneplatsen vara ren. I princip kan bönen förrättas var som helst. För att försäkra sig om att ha en ren plats kan en egen bönematta läggas ut. Till exempel i en moské behövs ingen egen bönematta.

According to tradition, the Prophet Muhammed said that “cleanliness is half of faith”. When carrying out the salah, the five daily prayers, both the place and the person praying must be ritually clean. In principle, prayers can be performed anywhere. To ensure that the place is clean, one can roll out one’s own prayer rug. In a mosque, individual prayer rugs are not needed.
