Forbidden City: Huabiao outside Tian’anmen. Huabiao: An ornamental column usually made of stone, placed before bridges, palaces, city walls and tombs in ancient times. The stem of the pillar is often carved with coiling dragons and other designs while near the top a sculptured cloud extends horisontally through the center of the column. A carved stone beast squats in a dish at the top.
