A globular wheel-made body, originally with a large, single handle extending from the upper shoulder halfway to the neck. Handle has broken off with only attachment points visible. A long, narrowing neck that extends to a wide rim that is strongly everted and flaring out like a canopy. Inside, small filling or pouring hole. Exact form of mouth unknown because the vessel is badly broken. The flaring mouth facilitated the pouring out of liquids. The texture is orange clay with reddish-brownish slip. No decoration apart from the slip. Large ring-base standing on a small flaring trumpet-like foot that features a round and convex central area. Traces of heavy use with chips missing from all over the vessel body, rim, and base, and the handle is torn off. Surface covered with smaller and large patches of thick white encrustations. Primarily used for storing and pouring liquids such as wine or oils, but may also have been used for ritual and burial purposes. The vesselis called Base Ring II Ware from Cyprus, “Bilbil”. See Amiran 1969, Imported Cypriot Ware, pp. 176-177, Pl. 54, Nos. 1, 6-7. Cf. Aija Jakovos, A.J. 008:078 jug.

The objects were collected in Jerusalem between 1911 and 1922 for Pastor Sven Linder of Uppsala, one of the leading figures in the Swedish Jerusalem Society. The aim was to study the land of the Bible, establish a biblical museum in Sweden, and use the objects as teaching materials. The collection was shipped to Sweden in early 1922. The objects are believed to originate from the territory of present-day Israel, which was then under British Mandate administration. They were primarily acquired or collected by John D. Whiting, a representative of the American Colony in Jerusalem, or purchased through the American Colony Store near the Jaffa Gate. The store sold antiquities in cooperation with Whiting’s brother-in-law, Frederick Vester. Professor John Garstang, who became Director of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem in 1919, is also reported to have donated pottery and oil lamps to Linder. Garstang simultaneously served as the first Director of the Department of Antiquities of the British Mandate administration in Palestine from 1920 to 1926 and was therefore responsible for granting export permits. Gustav Dalman, a representative of the German Protestant Institute in Jerusalem, was another important local coordinator involved in assembling objects for the collection.
