Light red clay; black glaze; added purpleand white. Inside and outside of mouth black with purple band around top; outside of handle black; narrow purple band at base of neck; on shoulder a large, black, purple and white palmette fan flanked by two small figures in black and purple dress (incised details); on body opposite handle a warrior facing left - wearing a helmet and shinguards, partly hidden by his large, circular shield, holding a spear - to his left and to his right are two figures holding spears (added purple, incised details); base line and narrow, purple band below figures; lower body and base top black.

A lekythos (pl. lekythoi) is generally a taller, cylindrical vessel with a small, deep mouth, narrow neck and a single handle. However, many variants of the shape do exist, including the rounded, squat form and the ovoid “Deianeira” form, all in various sizes. They were used for the storage of oils and are especially associated with funerary contexts. Towards the end of the fourth century BC they were functionally replaced by the unguentaria.
