An aryballos (pl. aryballoi) is typically a small globular or ovoid vessel with a narrow neck and a characteristically broad and flat lip, to prevent spillage. They were used to contain oil or perfume and are often depicted being used by athletes in vase paintings. At times the vessel is attached by a strap to the athlete’s wrist or hung on the wall.
