Anthropoid mummy coffin made for the man Neswaiu, son of Takeretdjehuty.
An anthropoid bivalve coffin, depicting the deceased wearing a tripartite wig, with a fillet around the brow, a plaited divine beard, with a broad collar placed on his chest. The face, throat and part of the beard is gilded, while the collar is painted on a layer of stucco. Below the collar is a winged solar scarab, again on a layer of stucco and painted, except for the sun-disk, which is gilded.

Below the scarab, three columns of text extend down the centre of the lid to the ankles. The upper half of the text-columns is flanked on each side by three deities, each with a label-text, as follows:

The lid has five tenons along each side, one at the centre of the head and one at centre of the foot. While the trough has corresponding sockets at the sides and head, the foot-end has two widely-spaced sockets, neither corresponding to the tongue at the lid-end, which is broken away. The trough and interior of the lid are entirely undecorated.

En antropoid tvådelad kista som avbildar den döde som bär en tredelad peruk, med ett band runt pannan, ett flätat gudomligt skägg och med en bred krage placerad på sitt bröst. Ansiktet, halsen och del av skägget är förgyllt medan kragen är målad på ett lager stuck. Nedanför kragen finns en bevingad solär skarabé, återigen på ett lager stuck och målad, förutom solskivan, som är förgylld.

Nedanför skarabén finns tre kolumner med text som löper nerför mitten av locket till anklarna. Den övre halvan av textkolumnerna är flankerade på varsin sida av tre gudomar, var och en med en etikett, som följer:

Locket har fem tappar längs ena sidan, en i mitten av huvudet och en i mitten av foten. Medan botten har motsvarande uttag på sidorna och huvudet, fotänden har två brett separerade uttag av vilka ingen motsvarar tappen på lock-sidan som är bortbruten. Botten och det inre av locket är helt odekorerade.

Neswaiu lived in Thebes during the third century BC.
His lavish set of coffins suggests that he belonged to the upper social classes. This is confirmed by the inscription on a statue that belongs to him, which is nowadays in Amsterdam. According to the statue, Neswaiu was a scribe and a priest in the temple of the god Montu at Thebes. A stele and a Ptah-Sokar-Osiris-figurine that belonged to Neswaiu are today in the British Museum in London.
On Neswaiu’s elaborately mummified and wrapped body rests a net of faience beads. On top of this is a richly decorated cartonnage, that is joined with a mask that covers the head.
The text on the inner coffin’s lid recounts amongst other things that he is the son of a woman named Takerheb. The black colour of the outer coffin recalls the fertile black soil of the Nile Valley. On the inside of the lid is a simple sketch of the goddess of the sky, Nut. She protects and envelopes the mummy in the coffin. As she every morning gives birth to the sun as a new day, so shall she give birth to the deceased Neswaiu into a new and eternal life.

Neswaiu levde i Thebe under det tredje århundradet f Kr.

Texten på den inre kistans lock berättar bland annat att han är son till en kvinna vid namn Takerheb. Den stora ytterkistans svarta färg anspelar på den livgivande svarta myllan
i Nildalen. På lockets insida finns en skissartad teckning av himmelsgudinnan Nut. Hon skyddar och omsluter mumien
i kistan. Liksom hon varje morgon föder solen till en ny dag, skall hon föda den döde Neswaiu till ett nytt och evigt liv.
