Cronholm, Folke

Folke Cronholm, generalkonsul i Quebec erhöll några av föremålen i samband med utnämningen i december 1905 till hedersmedlem av Huron de Lorette. Det gäller dräkten, mockasinerna, kängorna samt provet på älghår varmed tofsarna på dräkten är förfärdigade. Dessutom är de två diplomen från Huron de Lorette, ett av dem (trol # 1936.22.18) komponerad av Rev. Prosper Vincent.
Dräkten med älghårsbroderierna (eller ev. porcupine hair) har gjorts av Miss Caroline Gros Louis av Huron de Lorette (enligt brev av den 5 mars 1938 till Indian Agent i Huron de Lorette).

Snöskorna (# 1936.22.1) har tillverkats av Maurice Bastien, grand chief of the Huron enligt brev av den 22 mars 1938 från sonen Maurice Bastien, indian agent of Lorette). Familjen Bastien presenteras även i en folder såsom tillverkare av hudar i Lorette.

Folke Cronholm utnämndes i december till hedersmedlem av huron i Mission Lorette vid Quebec.
Indian Lorette presenterades i en folder som en by 8 miles norr om Quebec. Denna folder översändes av Cronholm till museet i samband med gåvan 1936 eller 1938 då föremålen ställdes ut.

Vid detta tillfälle erhöll han diplom och förvärvade eller fick som gåva dräkten och föremålen.
I arkivet finns brevsamling som visar inbjudningen till det högtidliga tillfället samt brev från de inbjudna där de tackar ja eller nej till middagen vid tillfället.

Diplomaten Folke Cronholms (1873-1945) huron-samling har förhållandvis god information i generalkatalogerna (info. från orginalhandlingarna). Den välbevarade samlingen är resultatet av och ett utrryck för ett högtidligt möte mellan huronindianerna i östra Kanada och den svenske diplomaten Folke Cronholm, utnämnd till "honorary cheif" av huron vid Mission Lorette. Cronholm-samlingen kompletteras dessutom bl.a. av museets mycket omfattande Folke Cronholm-bildsamling liksom av bevarade tidningsartiklar om Cronholm i EM´s arkiv.Bildsamlingen innehåller bl.a. även John Choate-fotografier från indianskolan i Carlisle, Pennsylvania (se särskild sektion i Nordamerika-utställningen, öppnad 2008). Cronholms huron-samling har studerats av Anne deStecher, Kanada (se hennes längre kommentar i Introduction to collection. Samlingen är omnämnd i S. Brunius, North American Indian collections at..., European Review of Native American Studies (1990).

Anne de Stecher, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, studied the Cronholm Huron-collection during 6th-7th of April, 2010, comments (in email sent 2010-04-13):
"The Folke Cronholm collection is a rare ensemble of material culture, ceremonial documents, and photographs. It brings together Huron-Wendat traditions of visual arts and diplomacy in a multi-dimensional record of relations between European and Aboriginal communities in an early twentieth century. This encounter continued the traditions of earlier periods of contact. The coat, headdress, moccasins and other garb of a Huron-Wendat chief given to General-Consul Folke Cronholm by the Huron-Wendat nation in 1905, are examples of an artistic tradition that dates to the later-eighteenth century. The certificates of adoption as an Honorary Chief are examples of Huron-Wendat agency in the realm of diplomacy, a tradition that dates from the late eighteenth century in their efforts to maintain a distinct identity. The tradition of moosehair embroidered art work played three important roles. First, the souvenir wares were a main source of income to the Huron-Wendat community of Jeune Lorette throughout the nineteenth century, compensating for the loss of livelihood from hunting. Second, they played a cultural role as a site for the expression of continuity in visual arts, a reflection of distinct Huron-Wendat identity. Third, the souvenir arts played a diplomatic role. Through moosehair embroidered text bark documents the Huron-Wendat created a mode of relations between their nation and settler communities that reflected their political and diplomatic goals. The documents bring together Great Lakes and European techniques of recording for public memory, the Great Lakes oral tradition and European text, and at the same time they bring the political tradition of a gift as memory device together with the tradition of souvenirs."
