The Aleutian baskets are made from grasses that grov on the southern end of-the Aleutian chain of islands, particularly on the Attu and Atkha islands. The native women of these two islands were always classed as the best basket weavers among the chain of islands. There are many beautiful specimens produced by the women living much higher to the northern end of.the chain, but the best product is the result of grasses imported from the extreme southern end: hence the term "Attu basket". The grass is the long beach grass which is . gathered in latesummer. The process of preparing the material is long and tedious.
