sked, Bronze spoon with swallowtail-shaped handle

The bowl of this spoon has an oblong oval shape with a pointed tip, reminiscent of a willow-leaf. The handle is arched and rounded on top and flat on the bottom. The upper surface of the handle is decorated with an engraved line pattern before the handle flattens out into a swallowtail-shaped handle-end. The spoon has bronze disease. Parts of the spoon are covered with black patina.

The curved shape of the handle and the swallowtail shaped handle-end indicate that this spoon was probably made in the mid-Goryeo period. Unlike eating customs in China and Japan, in Korea spoons were the main eating utensils and used for eating liquid food such as soup as well as solid food such as rice. Chopsticks were generally used to pick up food from side-dished. The tradition of using a set of chopsticks and a spoon made from metal for eating has continued in Korea until today.
