"Of the ushi people's drums, I have seen three different types. Fig. 295 shows one of these. The drum in question consists of a 38.5 cm. high, urn-like drumstick, which is not provided with a heel at the bottom. The drumstick is treated with fire, so that it has obtained the dark fields, lines and circles, which are visible in the picture, and is equipped with a pierced carrying strap button. Next to this is a circular sound opening with a diameter of 2 cm. The mouth of the drumstick measures 23 cm. in diameter. Above this is a white, hairless skin (probably antelope skin), 2 3 stretched with the help of wooden plugs. I have not observed a single drum with antelope skins in either the batwa or the sea baby; all the drums I have seen in these peoples have drum skins taken from lizards. ' Baushi also have double drums of the type I described from babisa. I have pictured a very small double drum from baushi here (fig. 296). It is only 34.5 cm. long and is somewhat irregular in shape, so that while one swelling of the drumstick has a diameter of 19.1 cm., the other is only 17.5 cm. The drumstick is tubular hollowed out and is thus open at both ends. Over the two openings, the drum skins of Varanus have been tightened with the help of wooden nails; however, one skin has fallen off." (pp. 369-370, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
