"I have already mentioned several times in this work occasions when batwa use fire for different purposes, but have not described how they produce this element. Before I explain how this is done, I would like to point out that firing with steel and flint is not known in these areas, where sufficiently hard rock is lacking for firing. The swamp people instead use the drill method to make fire. The fire extinguisher used in this case consists of two wooden sticks (Fig. 155). In one stick, which is taken from some tree with fairly loose wood, some holes are made so large that the end of the other and harder stick can fit in them. From one edge of the first-mentioned pin, notches are cut up to the holes, as the picture shows. I call such a stick a fire stick. The other is, as mentioned, of a harder kind of wood, it is stepped and usually has a length of 60-80 cm .; I call it a drill stick. (...) It is not always so easy to find drill sticks, which are at once straight and long enough. If a swamp does not have a drill stick of sufficient length to be used in the usual way, a smaller stick is inserted into an arrow shaft, as Fig. 156 shows. The smooth arrow shaft is excellent for drilling between the palms, and the batwaman has through this simple invention obtained an excellent tool from a swampy point of view." (pp. 241-242, von Rosen, 1916, translated from Swedish).
