Kolam mask depicting a village headman, aracci or vidane (Sin.).
Context
A village official appearing in the prelude or in stage one of a Kolam performance. He is usually accompanied by his scribe, called Liyanappu. His duty is that of an overseer.
Material
Wood, Vel-kaduru (Nux vomica).
Iconography
A small round mask with an amiable expression. The complexion of the face is yellowish brown. The prominent sideburns, carved and painted in thick black paint, are marks of identification of high dignitaries of the village. The eyebrows are drawn in black lines. The eyes are pale and not sharp. The mouth is closed and shaded in red. The ears are crudely painted. The mask appears to have seen long use as noticed from the scrapes and obliterations.
