Name and identification of character
A bull/bullock/ox.
Context
An animal character in the story portion in Kolam.
Material
Wood, vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica).
Iconography
The mask is painted in a blackish green colour. The the upper half of the snout is broad and tapers down gradually, ending with a slightly broadened nose. The two lengthy horns are separately fitted, but not painted. A bo-leaf (the leaf of a sacred fig tree) shaped decoration on the forehead (bigger than in specimen 1916.9.201) coloured white with a pink border. The eyes are turned sideways, with three curvatures as eyebrows. The mouth is slightly parted. The nostrils are painted in red. There are no ears, but two cavities on either side of the head have been used to fix the ears. The mask appears to have seen long use, as noticed from the tool dents on the head.
