Name and identification of character
Kolam mask depicting Prince Maname, Dhanurdhara Maname Kumaraya (Sin.), Dhanurdhara Kumaraya (Sin.).
Context
Traditional Kolam performers use this mask to represent Prince Maname, who appears in the story portion in Kolam. In the Kolam narrative named Maname kathava, the character Maname appears firstly as a prince in his student days, and secondly as a king. As a prince, he is called either Prince Maname or Prince Dhanurdhara.
Material
Wood, vel-kaduru (Nux vomica). Painted with traditional pigments.
Comments on the Umlauff Catalogue
The identification of the mask as depicting Vikrama Aemataya is incorrect. There is no Kolam story connected with the minister Vikrama. The colour of the face is wrongly identified as white in the Umlauff Catalogue.
