Information derived from Bribri visit: Sept 28 – Oct 02, 2023. This object is a healing item and not a child's toy as it has been previously described. In Bribri culture, physical and spiritual healing practices are performed by the Awá (traditional healer; plural Awápa). To treat an illness, the Awá use a group of healing items (together known as manojo) to communicate with different wards of the universe. Traditionally, physical ailments are attributed to an outside presence which travels with the physical person - healing items are used by the Awá to respectfully acknowledge the outside presence and ask it to return to its ward of the universe. Typically, the Awá is a member of a clan designated as healing practitioners and are taught through an oral transmission of knowledge. An apprentice is mentored by a practicing Awá over many years and receives multiple initiations before they can fully graduate to the status of Awá. In Bribri culture, sickness and disease are attributed to imbalance and disharmony rather than western understandings of physical ailments. Aspects of the natural world – most notably colors and certain species of animals – relate to specific ailments and can be utilized in healing practices to promote well-being.
