Dr. Julius Karel Jacobs (1842-1895) was a medical doctor in the Dutch army. He travelled with the army to Indonesia, including visits to Java and Bali. He was also an ethnographer and collector. He was greatly interested in ethnography and in 1881 he accompanied the Resident of Banyuwangi (in Java) on his expedition through Bali and Lombok. By that time, the Dutch controlled the north of Bali, while the south and the neighbouring island of Lombok were still composed of independent kingdoms.
