Inv. 54.30. Avskrift. 604 Sadashiv, Gokhale Poona 2 (india) M.A. Professor of History Dear Dr. Lindblom, I am sending per registered mail one flower crown and flower'belt for your museum which are worn by women of status on the'occasion of the ceremony commemoratinp the seventh month of the woman's first pregnancy.,.Along with this letter I am forwarding for your museum the coloured photo of my wife taken on the same occasion. When a woman enters in the seventh month of her preg- nancy a ceremony called "vadi" is performed. The female re- lätives, married and, having husbands and maidens are invited. Some most intimate widow relatives are also specially in- vited. But they do not take part in the ceremony. The lady of the occasion dresses herself in green sari and green blouse and wears the flower dress. Here Mrs. Gokhale is dressed in the same manner. She is dreåsed in the manner of,goddess.Saräswati, goddess of learning. She sits on the swing called "zopala", and near her are kept variout fruits. In her hand is Bhagawat Geeta and on it is inscribed, "There, is nothing more sacred than learning here on this earth" a line from the same book (Indian text). The leaves on the swing are from the sacred tree called Ashoka. . At the appointed time the invitees arrive and take • their seats.,The lady is asked to -Låste the fruits and songs describing the behaviour of the.pregnant lady till the seventh month or songs desCribing the Pregnancy of Lady Sita, wife of Lord Rama, are sung. When this is over sweets are distributed and the ceremony comes to an end. With regards, I remain, D.V. Gokhale My wife, Mrs. Vidyadevi, has given birth to a female child, named Sandhya, on 30/4 (?) 1954. [ocr]
