Tre miljoner svenskar satt och trängdes kring radioapparater natten den 26 juni 1959. I Sveriges Radio var det helt tyst – i stället hade svenskarna rattat in Radio Luxemburg på mellanvågsstation 208 för att höra en boxningsmatch, direktsänd från New York. Ingemar »Ingo« Johansson mötte regerande världsmästaren i tungvikt, Floyd Pattersson.
Suget efter att följa titelmatchen var enormt, inte minst eftersom nyhetstidningarna hade hårdbevakat Ingos träning i flera månader.
Men Sveriges Radio valde att inte sända matchen eftersom de ansåg att boxning var för omoraliskt. I stället hade engelskspråkiga Radio Luxemburg en svensk kommentator, som mitt i natten meddelade lyssnarna att Ingemar Johansson, 26-årig stensättare från Göteborg, vunnit världsmästartiteln.
25 000 människor mötte Ingo när han landade på Ullevi i helikopter några dagar senare. Hans pråliga världsmästarbälte finns att se på Idrottsmuseet i Kviberg, i östra Göteborg.

Sweden sat on the edge of its seat
Three million Swedes crowded around radios during the night of 26 June 1959. The Swedish Radio broadcast was silent – instead, Swedes had tuned in to Radio Luxembourg at 208 on the medium wave dial to listen to a boxing match broadcast live from New York. Ingemar “Ingo” Johansson was battling the reigning world heavyweight champion, Floyd Pattersson.
The desire to follow the title match was huge, not least because the newspapers had closely followed Johansson’s training for months. But Swedish Radio chose not to broadcast the match because it felt boxing was too immoral. Instead, the English-speaking Radio Luxembourg had a Swedish commentator, who in the middle of the night informed listeners that Ingemar Johansson, a 26-year-old paving-stone layer from Gothenburg, had won the title of World Champion. When he landed at Ullevi in a helicopter a few days later, 25,000 people met him. His showy world championship belt can be seen at the Sports Museum in Kviberg, in eastern Gothenburg.
